Mariateresa Di Lascia: the maternal figure and the female body in the novel Passaggio in ombra

Miroslava FERRAROVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):195-203 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.012

The article deals with two important and ever-present themes of Mariateresa Di Lascia's novel Passaggio in ombra (Passage in the Shadow). The themes are those of the maternal figure and the female body. The maternal figure is mainly that of the protagonist's mother, but other mothers are also presented in the novel, those of within the village community, grandmothers, perfect mothers and those who behaved badly by abandoning their children. In the second part of the novel, however, there is the absence of motherhood in the protagonist and the decline of her life in solitude. This decline is also accompanied by the description of the body,...

La corporéité troublante dans le théâtre contemporainVARIAFrench

The disturbing physicality in the contemporary theatre

Nikol MARTINKOVÁ BURIANOVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):183-193 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.011

Contemporary theatre is frequently based on the refusal of the mimetic restitution of man. The defeated man, the disappearing body, allows the speech to be incarnated on stage in its full depth. In addition, this duality of the speaking and spoken body finds its culmination in the form of the puppet or effigy, which leaves the spectator in hesitation between the mechanical and the living. The puppet clearly changes the traditional view of itself. In contemporary theatre, the performer’s body is more often seen as its equal partner. Moreover, it is not the puppet that imitates an actor in his movements, but it is the actor that legitimizes...

When political anthroponyms shape verbs: neologisms in -iser/-izovat/-(iz)owaæ in French, Czech, and Polish

Radka MUDROCHOVÁ, Paulina MAZURKIEWICZ

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):159-180 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.010

This article examines neological verb formation derived from political proper names in French, Czech, and Polish. Using the productive suffixes -iser (Fr.), -izovat (Cz.), and -(iz)owaæ (Pl.), it explores how anthroponyms evolve into verbs carrying ideological, stereotypical, or critical meanings. Based on media and lexical corpora, the study analyzes morphological patterns, semantic specificities, and discursive usage. Special focus is given to the expressive value, contextual anchoring, and critical function of these verbs in political discourse. Through a comparative approach, the article highlights derivational...

Rap and verbal neology: exploring lexicogenic processes in a contemporary French corpus

Andrzej NAPIERALSKI Jr., Anne GENSANE

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):141-157 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.009

This article analyzes the processes of neological verb formation in French rap based on a carefully constructed corpus. It highlights the strategies of derivation, conversion, back-formation, and truncation, distinguishing between the internal and external matrices used by rappers to create new terms. Finally, the article highlights the diffusion of neologisms, distinguishing between media-driven neology and identity-based neology, and emphasizes the role of rap as a vehicle for linguistic diffusion among younger generations.

Neological verbs in Galician: toward a renewed syntactic prototypicality

Alexandre Rodríguez GUERRA

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):117-139 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.008

This paper examines neological verbs in the Galician language. The syntactic analysis (based on a functionalist methodology) of a corpus with 218 examples from the period 2020-2022 (comprising 147 different verbs) from the Observatory of Neology at the University of Vigo is undertaken, and a formal, chronological, and thematic study is also carried out, contrasting, when possible, the results of these Galician neological verbs with those from other languages. Most of them are formed by prefixation and suffixation, while borrowings are relatively rare. The majority are attested only once and are concentrated in the thematic fields of culture, society,...

Silvia Domenica ZOLLO

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):97-115 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.007

This article analyzes futuristic neological verbs coined by Anne-Caroline Paucot, a French futurist writer who, since 2013, has explored possible futures in order to inform present-day actions. After introducing the author and outlining the linguistic and extralinguistic principles underlying Paucot’s lexical creativity, the study presents the NéoDem1 corpus and details the theoretical frameworks used to model lexicogenic matrices and the functioning of the collected neological verbs. It then examines the morphological, semantic, and thematic structures of the linguistic and extralinguistic paradigms to which Paucot’s futuristic...

Rap and verbal neology : a contrastive study of English linguistic assimilation in Polish, Czech, and French

Anne GENSANE, Andrzej NAPIERALSKI Jr., Alena NÌMCOVÁ POLICKÁ, Lena CZERWIÑSKA

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):75-93 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.004

This study provides a contrastive analysis of English verb borrowings in a trilingual rap corpus (French, Polish, and Czech). Based on 300 texts selected from the most-streamed 2024 albums in France, Poland, and Czechia, the research highlights the morphological, phonetic, syntactic, and semantic processes involved in the adaptation of English verbs. The findings reveal language-specific assimilation strategies that reflect patterns of linguistic hybridization influenced by the global impact of anglophone hip-hop culture.

Neological verbs in the digital space: French-Italian comparative study

Filip KOLECKI

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):63-74 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.003

The Internet, as a communicative space, plays an important role in shaping contemporary language fostering the intensification of word-formation processes and the adaptation of new lexical units. A particularly noteworthy phenomenon in this context is the emergence of verbal neologisms resulting from the assimilation of terms related to digital culture, social media, and communication practices characteristic of the online environment. Verbs such as googler/googlare, ghoster/ghostare or retweeter/retwittare are examples of linguistic hybrids, often borrowed from English and adapted to the inflectional system...

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):39-61 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.002

This article offers a comparative analysis of English-derived gaming verbs and their integration into four languages: Polish, Czech, French, and Italian. Drawing on an oral corpus composed of YouTube videos, the study identifies some of the English verbs that are common to all four languages in gaming interactions and examines their morphological and syntactic adaptation in each language. Particular attention is devoted to verbal neology, focusing on how players appropriate and adapt Anglophone terms within their linguistic contexts. The analysis also explores the degree of semantic shift from the original English meanings, highlighting how these borrowed...

Neological verbs derived from English borrowings: adaptation processes in Czech, French, and Lithuanian through the lexical field of new behaviors and emerging forms of communication

Zuzana HILDENBRAND, Vitalija KAZLAUSKIENE, Radka MUDROCHOVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2025, 21(1-2):15-38 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2025.001

This article investigates the adaptation of English-origin neological verbs in three structurally diverse languages: Czech, French, and Lithuanian. It focuses on verbs that emerge primarily in contexts of new social behaviors and digital communication. Drawing on corpus-based data, the study identifies key morphosyntactic and graphic adaptation strategies, such as suffixation, prefixation, and phonographic variation. It also considers sociolinguistic and stylistic aspects influencing the integration and dissemination of these verbs. Despite cross-linguistic differences, the findings reveal converging trends shaped by the interplay between linguistic...

Kvìtu¹e KUNE©OVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):79-88 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.007

The paper explores the relationship between literary and musical works withitin the domain of "interart studies," focusing ont he transgression between arts, a source of inspiration frequently found in the texts of authors of Haitian origin. In analyzing the works of Dany Laferrière, Ursula Mathis-Moser uses the term intermediality to describe the role of music and song in his writing. This article aims to reflect on the same subject in the works of his compatriot, Stanley Péan, a novelist and short story writer, also known as a music lover and lyricist. Using Le temps s'enfuit (Time flies), a story intended for youth, as a backdrop, we...

Literature Confronting Racism in Contemporary Intellectual Discourse in Quebec

Michal OBSZYÑSKI

Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):65-78 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.006

In this paper we will present the main lines of the debate around the idea of racism as approached by authors such as Pierre Nepveu, Marco Micone, Rodney Saint-Éloi, Natasha Kanapé Fontaine, and Dany Laferrière. Drawing on recent research by Sean Mills and David Austin, as well as in the context of the debate on the decolonization of Canadian history, the aim is to show the emergence of a new, more open, and direct approach to the problem of Quebec's relationship to otherness, as opposed to the political radicalization that we are observing nowadays. Based on the methodological tools of discourse analysis, this study will also aim to show the...

La fin du monde au Nord à travers le roman Le retour de l’ours de Catherine LafranceLittératureFrench

The End of the World in the North through the Novel Le retour de l'Ours by Catherine Lafrance

Dalibor ®ÍLA

Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):55-63 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.005

The novel Le retour de l'ours by Quebec writer Catherine Lafrance represents one of the recent French-Canadian books inspired by the end of the world. It narrates the story of the inhabitants of an Inuit village in Canada's Far North, survivors of a climate apocalypse. Now a legend to them, the Apocalypse is accompanied by a prophecy of the return of a polar bear. When Aloupa, the village watchman, announces having spotted one, the peaceful existence of the villagers comes to an end. The return of the bear is a reflection on the Canadian Far North and its environment, changed after severe climatic cataclysms. A tale of ecological anticipation,...

Zdenìk Lorenc and his Translation Activities

Michal BAUER

Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):29-46 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.003

The translation activity of the Czech surrealist poet and writer Zdenìk Lorenc has been a part of Czech literature and Czech-French artistic relations for at least six decades and proves, among other things, his interest in the works of French writers and French art in general. Lorenc first made Tristan Tzara's work available in the Czech environment secretly in the 1940s for his friends. Later, he introduced it to a wider readership, especially in the 1960s and, posthumously, at the beginning of the 21st century. Lorenc's mediating work provides a remarkable picture of Tzara's reception and reflection in the Czech context.

Après la chute de l'ex-URSS… Ex- in the Construction of Social Meaning of Proper Nouns in the Written Press

Agata RÊBKOWSKA

Écho des études romanes 2024, 20(1):17-27 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2024.002

The aim of the article is to show the role of the prefix ex- in constructing the social meaning of the proper noun l'URSS in French media discourse. Observing the syntactic context of the proper noun l'URSS where the prefix appears allowed for the distinction of three most common effects of its use : the actualization of the temporal meaning of the proper noun, the strengthening of the enunciator's anthropocentric perspective, and the use of the structure ex-URSS as a tool for categorization in contemporary news press. The analysis is based on press articles that appeared in the journals Le Monde, Le Figaro,...
