Suggestions for a description of verbs suffixed in -eggiare and -izzare: data from ancient Italian in diachronic and comparative perspective

Liana TRONCI

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):5-29 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.001

This article deals with verbal forms suffixed with -eggiare and -izzare in Old Italian. Relevant forms were collected from the TLIO lexical and textual resources: they amount to 240 -eggiare items and 85 -izzare items. Both suffixes derive from Latin: the former is the output of regular morpho-phonetic changes from Late Latin -idiāre, whereas the latter occurs in loanwords and calques formed on Classical Latin verbs in -izāre. Synchronically, there are several allotropes, indicating the functional overlapping of the two suffixes. Diachronically, the comparison with Ancient Greek data allows us to shed a new light on a state of affairs in...

Anomalie morfologiche in alcuni paradigmi verbali del dialetto insubre lombardo nord-orientale (Monte di Brianza)Italian

Morphological anomalies in some verbal paradigms of north-east Lombard dialect (Monte di Brianza)

Fabio RIPAMONTI

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):31-52 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.002

The present article focuses on a dialectal variant of Western Lombard that is spoken in the villages around the «Monte di Brianza» (district of Lecco, Italy) and which has been hardly studied. In the first section, historical-geographical coordinates and peculiarities of this dialect are outlined in relation to contiguous varieties. After that, three issues of the verbal morphology of brianzolo showing an anomalous behaviour are analysed: 1) a series of imperatives that end either by etymology or by analogy with a velar and that through the addition of an infix -ar- can express a modality between imperative and future; 2) a distribution of...

Mediation and anglicisms in French and Italian

Michele DE GIOIA

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):53-66 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.003

As a result of the harmonizing framework of European law, mediation practices in France and Italy are highly influenced by North American concepts. Legally, mediation is reduced to one of the modes of conflict resolution aiming to avoid recourse to institutional justice. Linguistically, discourse on mediation is increasingly full of anglicisms, observable, for instance, on official Web sites or in a terminographic bilingual book. This article provides illustrations of this influence from a comparative French-Italian terminological perspective.

The cowardly pimp: the first braggart soldier of the Spanish theater of the XVI?

Josef PROKOP

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):67-77 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.004

If we look for the representations of the old theatrical type of the braggart soldier in the Spanish theatre of the 16th century, we soon discover that practically no Spanish avatar of the type corresponds completely to the numerous examples of the ancient Greco-Roman archetype. However, it is possible to find several characters who, although they do not comply with all the tiny nuances of the characteristics, approach the said archetype in many points. In the theatre of the sixteenth century the character of Sigüenza of the short play El Rufián cobarde written by Lope de Rueda could be the first of them. Extracted the absence of boasting about conquests...

Two representations of "difference" in France under the ancien régime: the Peruvian woman by Madame de Graffigny (1747) and the Huron by Voltaire (1767)

Jitka RADIMSKÁ

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):79-88 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.005

The article brings a complementary view of two "bestsellers" of the 18th century, published anonymously but soon reedited under the names of their authors: the epistolary novel Lettres d'une Péruvienne by Mme de Graffigny (1947) and "a real story" L'Ingénu by Voltaire (1767). Both texts, severely criticised by some but enthuasiasticaly accepted by others, deserve being resituated in their century as they mirror back its reflection. This is the perspective through which we observe the editorial, generic and narative stategies used by Mme de Graffigny and Voltaire in their outstandingly successful editions.

Eugène Ionesco's Journeys Among the Dead: an example of station drama

Tomasz KACZMAREK

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):89-101 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.006

In this article we study the last completed piece of Eugène Ionesco Journeys Among the Dead in the perspective of expressionist aesthetics. The French playwright uses the form of a station drama in the same way as August Strindberg, precursor of the German movement, which allows him to express his anxieties and phobias. The protagonist, who is the double of the writer, sets off in the world of darkness to find his lost identity and to find his mother who he had abandoned. His wandering represents real ordeal within which he talks with the dead to get even (as with his father) or seek forgiveness, as with his mother.

Softness put into discourse: perception and enunciation in Philippe Jaccottet's Cahier de Verdure

Georges HANI

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):103-116 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.007

In Philippe Jaccottet's Cahier de Verdure, we find and test softness a number of times: a quasi-pregnant effect of speech in the seven poems that make up the collection, but we note that this discursive effect which is linked to visual, tactile and auditory perception is considered as a profound language that controls the meaningful process in the collection. Assuming that perception is a semiotic process that involves tensions which dominate discourse and, relying on the data of tensive semiotics, we try to question the sources of softness through an analysis of the poems in the collection.

The notions of Americanization and Americanity: origins, evolution and literary applications in contemporary Quebec

Eva VOLDØICHOVÁ BERÁNKOVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):117-123 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.008

The article deals with the evolution of the concepts of Americanization and Americanity from the Quiet Revolution to the present day, as well as to their impact on the contemporary Quebec novel. After having compared and put into context the various definitions of Americanization and Americanity, we retrace the history and the paradoxes of their theorization. Finally, the text provides a brief typology of contemporary novels in which the United States play a crucial role: "novels of the road" that have multiplied since the 1980s, following the inspiration of Volkswagen blues (1984) by Jacques Poulin or The Lament of Charlie Longsong (1996)...

The metaphorization of liquid existence: Guillaume Vigneault’s Diary of a Shipwreck

Veronika ÈERNÍKOVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2019, 15(1):125-135 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2019.009

In 2000, Zygmunt Bauman published an essay called Liquid Modernity in which contemporary society is compared to liquids: unstable and insecure, obsessed with satisfying desires, incapable of long-term relationships. In the same year, Carnets de naufrage, the first novel by the young Quebec writer Guillaume Vigneault is published, which presents an identical perception of society and, moreover, uses the liquid metaphor. The article not only introduces the Bauman's concept of liquid society and connects it to the Vigneault's vision, but mainly focuses on how the Quebec author creates and shapes the liquid metaphor.
