Monika BREZOVÁKOVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):5-9 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.009

The paper deals with dictatorship in the selected novel by a Hispanic author. At the beginning, the paper focuses primarily on thinking about the meaning of literature and later on moves to the artistic depiction of dictatorship in Hispanic literature. In order to illustrate the reflection of dictatorship and dictator in the novel we focus on the work of Chilean writer Isabel Allende and her novel My Invented Country, in which she portrays Chile through characteristics of the people.

Ennemies in spite of ourselves, sisters in spite of everything: the theme of "witness" in J. M. G. Le Clézio's Wandering Star

Nesrine EL-ZINE

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):11-25 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.010

Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2008 with a literary production marked by a mixture of several traits of different literary movements in the 20th century. In his work Étoile errante (Wandering Star), Le Clézio sheds light on a double human drama marked by exodus, suffering, and the uncertainty of fate. While reflecting the true complexity of the human's dimension in this conflict, the story of Nejma and Esther proves to us that war, fueled by hatred and intolerance towards others, brings the two heroines together more than it divides them; it unites them by a kind of equality of misfortune and suffering....

The relationship to history in the diasporic imagination of Haitian novelists in Quebec

Józef KWATERKO

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):27-34 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.011

This paper is devoted to different ways in which Haitian novelists inscribe history in their narratives. Three imaginary approaches of space and time are to be distinguished: exile, autofiction, and post-exile. Socio-critical readings of Haitian novels will reveal the framing of individual and collective history, the historicity of the text itself, and in particular the historical representations embedded in the social discourse, its system of values and its ideology.

Creating at the crossroads of cultures: La chair du maître by Dany Laferrière and its film adaptation by Laurent Cantet

Katarzyna WÓJCIK

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):35-49 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.012

Literature and cinema can be considered as a ground for transnational exchange, both at the level of fiction and artistic creation. The collection of short stories La Chair du maître (1997) by Dany Laferrière - a Quebec writer of Haitian origin - is an example of this literary creation that passes through national borders and inscribes experiences from another culture into Quebec's literary field. Laferrière's text served as inspiration for French director Laurent Cantet, who put on screen chosen short stories in the film Vers le sud (Heading South, 2005). Cantet's film is not only a filmic transposition of a "transnational" literary...

Écrire face à la « faille diasporique » : Haïti kenbe là ! (2010) de Rodney Saint-ÉloiFrench

Writing while facing the "diasporic rift": Haïti kenbe là! (2010) by Rodney Saint-Éloi

Alessia VIGNOLI

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):51-61 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.013

The first wave of Haitian migration in Quebec dates back to the 1960s, as a direct consequence of François Duvalier's dictatorial regime (1957-1971). The works published in Montreal by Haitian writers such as Anthony Phelps, Gérard Étienne and Émile Ollivier were written in a state of urgency and were strongly connected to the "duty of memory" and the necessity of bearing witness to the horrors of the Duvalier dictatorship. After the earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, some Haitian writers living in Quebec felt compelled to write in order to cope with the disaster. Soon after the publication of Dany Laferrière's text Tout bouge autour...

The Haitians of Montreal. Representation of the Montreal Haitian community in the lodyans of Georges Anglade and Stanley Péan

Sara DEL ROSSI

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):63-74 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.014

This essay deals with the portrayal of the Haitian community in Montreal in Georges Anglade's and Stanley Péan's satirical texts (lodyans). The comparative analysis shows that the generation gap between the two authors influences their representation of the relationship between Haitian immigrants, Haiti and Quebec. It also has an impact on their identity issues. Anglade's generation is melancholic, nostalgic and often isolated. His narration is characterized by humor based on the contrast between North and South, modernity and tradition, but is not connected to reality. To Anglade's centripetal perspective, Péan opposes a centrifuge position. In fact,...

Montreal magazine Vice Versa: readers' opinions

Gerardo ACERENZA

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):75-84 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.015

No other cultural magazine than Vice Versa has attracted attention of critics in Quebec, Canada and elsewhere in the world. Since its appearance on the Montreal's cultural scene, there is no count of the total number of scientific articles, communications at conferences and master's theses dedicated to this magazine. Each scientific work on "migrant literature" refers to the journal Vice Versa. We have the impression that everything, or almost everything, has already been said on this magazine. The aim of this article is to understand the feelings of the readers of Vice Versa, the feelings of the magazine's subscribers, but also...

The impact of Spanish regional varieties on the simultaneous interpreting into Czech

Zuzana BALOUNOVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):85-94 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.016

In many ways, the society in which we live is more globalized and linguistically diverse than ever before. Necessarily, this poses a challenge for interpreters because, in practical terms, it means that Spanish to Czech interpreters are likely to be often in contact with native Spanish speakers not only from Europe but also from Central and South America. Therefore, they should have a profound knowledge of different regional varieties of Spanish. To determinate whether students of Spanish to Czech interpreting are acquainted with these varieties, the author of this article conducted an experiment at the Institute of Translation Studies, Charles University....

Czech translations from Judeo-Spanish: translater as a historian

Martina KUTKOVÁ

Écho des études romanes 2020, 16(2):95-103 | DOI: 10.32725/eer.2020.017

In 2008, the Israeli authorities approved the establishment of the National Academy for Judeo-Spanish, which was motivated by the agreement of the Spanish and Israeli academics. The Academy, as a part of the RAE, shall devote itself to the preservation of the Judeo-Spanish language that presents not only Jewish linguistic patrimony but also the Hispanic one. In the Czech context, a few graduate linguistic works referred to the Judeo-Spanish language. However, none of them reflected Judeo-Spanish texts in the Czech context, we lack monographs dedicated to the translation issues of such documents. The topic presents an empty space in the context of the...
